The many stunning beaches in Istria make Croatia’s northernmost peninsula one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. Along a coastline stretching approximately 540 kilometers, countless beautiful bays attract visitors from all over the world to this sought-after vacation region. Many of these beaches even fly the Blue Flag, a certification for excellent water quality and top-notch facilities—yet another reason why so many travelers choose Istria for a seaside holiday. The variety of swimming spots is also impressive! Well-maintained concrete beaches, picturesque pebble coves, nudist (FKK) beaches, secluded dreamlike bays, and even sandy beaches await you for an unforgettable beach vacation. But where exactly are the most beautiful beaches in Istria, what are the insider tips, and which coastal towns are best suited for a summer getaway?
In this travel guide, we present the best beaches in Istria that we have personally visited—including our own insider tips. This article is based on our yearly travels in the region. You’ll also find stunning photos, recommendations, and useful information to help you choose the perfect holiday destination.
Beach Lone Bay (Rovinj)
A true highlight for a beach holiday in Istria is the beautiful Lone Bay in Rovinj. This fine pebble beach is located right within an idyllic forest park near the coastal town, where you’ll also find many more coves and stunning beaches in Rovinj.
Fragrant pine trees provide wonderful natural shade and create a romantic Mediterranean atmosphere. While swimming here, we experienced excellent water quality and a pleasantly calm setting. There’s also a cozy little beach bar that offers bamboo sun loungers and umbrellas for guests.
Tip: Just nearby is the very popular Hotel Eden, a fantastic 4-star-hotel, which delights with its exceptional location near the beach and a beautiful pool.
Hawaii Beach (Pula)
One of the most beautiful beaches in Istria is Hawaii Beach in Pula. This bay is located within the popular Verudela resort area, where several hotels, leisure facilities, and restaurants create perfect conditions for a fantastic beach holiday in Pula. What makes Hawaii Beach so special is its breathtaking scenery—the turquoise sea, white pebbles, and dramatic rock formations create a picture straight out of a travel magazine.
During our visit, the water was crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling. Along the coastline of the Verudela peninsula, you’ll also find many other stunning beaches in Pula that are perfect for enjoying sunny summer days.
Tip: Travelers love the wonderful 3-star Hotel Park Plaza Arena Pula, which is located in a prime location directly behind the dreamlike Hawaii Beach!
Njive Beach (Premantura)
Njive Beach is a true dream beach near the village of Premantura in Istria and is arguably one of the most beautiful bays in all of Croatia. This stunning cove is located within the famous Cape Kamenjak Nature Park, a protected area where we discovered some of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches in Istria.
This beach is an absolutely breathtaking pebble bay set in a unique natural setting. Surrounded by dense pine forests, it captivates visitors with stunning turquoise sea colors and rugged rock formations, where you can also find even more secluded swimming spots.
Tip: The holiday resort next to Cape Kamenjak is Premantura. Especially recommendable here is the Aparthotel Punta Blu, a beautifully equipped hotel with a pool.
Sandy Beach Zambratija (Umag)
The small sandy beach of Zambratija in Umag is a true insider tip among Istria’s best beaches. Located just north of Umag, this fantastic bay stands out for its peaceful atmosphere, fine sand, and very shallow entry into the sea. There’s also a cool beach bar where you can enjoy fantastic views of the sea.
During our visits, Zambratija Beach was especially popular with families with young children, although it was noticeably quieter in the off-season compared to the peak summer months. Nearby, you’ll find several privately run holiday apartments that are perfect for a beach vacation.
Tip: Really popular in the village of Zambratija are the apartments from the Sunny House, which are located not far from the sandy beach!
Girandella Beaches (Rabac)
The Girandella beaches are located in the picturesque holiday resort of Rabac in southeastern Istria and are among the absolute dream beaches of the region. The many white pebble coves lined up along the scenic coastline create a real wow effect and promise a perfect holiday atmosphere. From family-friendly beaches and FKK areas to dog-friendly sections, there’s something for everyone here.
What impressed us most were the stunning turquoise sea colors, which genuinely reminded us of Caribbean beaches while swimming. There’s also an excellent selection of restaurants, beach bars, and beachfront hotels nearby.
Tip: There are several beach hotels along the coast. Really great is the Girandella Resort, which with its pool and the perfect location, is an excellent choice for a beach vacation.
Beach Lanterna Camping (Poreč)
A fantastic tip is the beaches at Lanterna Campsite in Poreč—especially Val Adria Sandy Family Beach, is for us one of the most impressive sandy beaches in Istria. Located within a trendy holiday village, this snow-white, soft sandy beach offers spectacular turquoise sea colors and there is always this amazing holiday vibe. Families with young children especially appreciate the gently sloping shoreline. In addition, along the Lanterna coastline, you’ll find numerous other beautiful and peaceful bays and swimming spots.
Tip: The Lanterna Premium Camping Resort is one of the most popular campsites in Istria. Especially sought after are the mobile homes there, which are perfect for a beach vacation!
Cape Kamenjak
One of the most impressive coastal areas in Istria is Cape Kamenjak, located within the Kamenjak Nature Park near Premantura. This wild and romantic landscape features a unique combination of rugged cliffs, turquoise sea, and hidden coves. We were especially impressed by the dramatic cliffs, where we often saw brave visitors jumping into the crystal-clear water below.
The rocks are also perfect for sunbathing, while the stunning sea colors create a breathtaking backdrop. A special tip—and one of our favorite spots—is the Safari Bar, a rustic beach bar in the middle of the cape that also features an adventurous playground.
Maestral Beach (Novigrad)
One of the most popular and at the same time most beautiful beaches in Istria is Maestral Beach, located just south of the old town of Novigrad. This beautiful white pebble beach is laid out in a crescent shape, giving the bay a very unique atmosphere. The turquoise sea colors are simply irresistible and perfect for swimming.
A special highlight for us is the infinity pool right by the beach, which can also be used free of charge by non-hotel guests. Behind the bay runs a lovely promenade lined with restaurants and cafés offering plenty of dining options.
Tip: A great recommendation for a beach holiday is the Hotel Aminess Maestral, a fantastic 4-star hotel with pools and tennis courts, perfectly located near the beach and the old town.
Valbandon Beach (Fazana)
Valbandon Beach is a highly recommended spot on Istria’s west coast. Located in the popular seaside town of Fažana, this pebble beach is especially suitable for families with children.
Here, you’ll find a long stretch of pebbles with a fascinating white sandbank, offering plenty of space for sunbathing. The surrounding area also provides excellent tourist infrastructure, including numerous restaurants and cafés accessible via a scenic seaside promenade. Fažana also offers a wide range of accommodations near the beach, making it an magnificent destination for a seaside holiday.
Tip: Not far from the beach are the Apartments Josip, which score especially well with cleanliness and the fantastic location near the sea!
Mulini Beach (Rovinj)
Mulini Beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches for a holiday in Istria. Located just a short distance from Rovinj’s old town, it’s perfect if you want to combine beach time with sightseeing and strolling through town.
This popular bay features a mix of concrete platforms and pebble areas and is known for its incredibly vibrant water colors. The beach is also adjacent to a forest park, giving it a wonderful Mediterranean feel. Thanks to its sheltered location, the sea was always calm during our visits, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Tip: Behind the beach Mulini is the grandiose 5-star Hotel Monte Mulini, the perfect accommodation for a very special vacation in Rovinj!
Orsera Beach (Vrsar)
Orsera Beach is a fantastic recommendation for unforgettable beach days in Istria. Located in the charming resort town of Vrsar, it offers a great mix of pebble, concrete, and rocky beach areas, all known for their cleanliness and excellent infrastructure.
Behind the beach, you’ll find a well-maintained grassy sunbathing area with plenty of space for visitors. Tall pine trees provide welcome shade along the bay on hot summer days. This beach is especially family-friendly, with a playground and a slide for children, ensuring plenty of fun and variety.
Tip: The Romana Dream Apartments are an excellent place to stay, beautifully situated by the marina and just a short walk from the beach, offering the perfect holiday location.
Cyclon’s Beach (Pula)
Cyclon’s Beach in western Pula is definitely a hidden gem among Istria’s most beautiful beaches. It completely surprised us! Surrounded by stunning nature and dramatic rock formations, this idyllic bay offers a truly picturesque setting. The beach is a mix of pebbles and rocks, framed by green pine trees and inviting turquoise waters perfect for a refreshing swim.
Right next to it is the famous Pula Cave, another highlight of the region. A hidden beach in the heart of nature that you definitely shouldn’t miss during your stay in Pula.

Polynesia Beach (Umag)
Polynesia Beach is a true jewel of the Umag region in northern Istria. This natural dream beach enchants bathers with its unique Mediterranean picture-book setting. The crystal clear sea shines in the most amazing shades of turquoise blue, and while sunbathing you can enjoy a great view of the Roman archaeological site, which can also be reached on foot from the bay. In addition, the sea along this stretch of coast is crystal clear, so you can go snorkeling and discover an interesting underwater world with a large variety of fish.
Beaches Sveti Andrea (Rabac)
Sveti Andrea Beach, located in the resort town of Rabac, is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches on Istria’s east coast. This stretch consists of a mix of small pebble coves and rocky beaches, all known for their excellent facilities and cleanliness. Visitors love the stunning scenery, with incredible sea colors, fine light pebbles, and picturesque rock formations.
Behind the beach runs a charming promenade leading to the center of Rabac, lined with numerous cafés and restaurants that invite you to relax and linger.

Bay Pinizule (Premantura)
The magnificent natural beach Pinizule is a real dream cove in the Kamenjak Nature Park near Premantura and a true gem among the best beaches in Istria. Especially nature lovers and individualists appreciate this natural coastal strip, where a stone beach with a picturesque small pebble cove invites you to swim. Here you will find an unspoiled nature with fragrant pine forests and the crystal clear turquoise sea is ideal for snorkeling. In the cool forest behind the beach there is also a really cozy beach bar that serves delicious snacks and cool drinks.
Tip: For a beach holiday, we recommend the town of Premantura. Here you can find good accommodations like Villa Adriana, a great bed and breakfast with a nice pool!
