General Information about Montalcino

Montalcino, a town of about 6,000 inhabitants, is beautifully situated on a 567-meter-high hill in the famous Val d’Orcia, about 30 kilometers south of Siena and 80 kilometers from Florence. Thanks to its excellent red wine, called Brunello di Montalcino, and the beautiful historic old town, Montalcino is one of the most wonderful things to see in Tuscany. This ruby-colored wine is produced according to the strictest DOCG rules and is made of only one grape, the Sangiovese Grosso grape. The wine ages for at least 2 years in oak barrels, and then it ages for at least 4 months in the bottle.

The history of Montalcino dates back to the era of the Etruscans, although the wine from Montalcino was mentioned only in 1550. However, the Brunello wine, now famous all over the world, was born only at the end of the nineteenth century. Especially worth visiting is also the historic center of Montalcino with numerous attractions that captivate tourists. Among them is the imposing Fortress of Montalcino, which dates from the 14th century and is considered the landmark of the old town.

The Cathedral of Santissimo Salvatore, also known as the Cathedral of Montalcino, is one of the most important church buildings in the old town. It dates back to the year 1000, but was only declared a cathedral by Pope Pius II around 450 years later. The neoclassical style dates back to the 19th century, when the cathedral had almost been completely renovated between 1818 and 1832. Around the square there is a lovely small park with a picturesque view over the roofs of the old town.

Fortress of Montalcino (Fortezza)

Probably the most interesting attraction of Montalcino is the Fortezza, an imposing fortress from the 14th century, which at that time served to protect the town.
