General Information about the Klis Fortress

The Klis Fortress is located in the municipality of Klis in Croatia, about 12 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Split. It is situated on an ancient road that once led from the Adriatic coast via Solin to Bosnia. Famous for its rich historical past, the castle ruins played a particularly important role in the Middle Ages and early modern times. Thanks to its strategic location, it was even called the “Key of Dalmatia”. The history of Klis can be traced back to the Illyrians and Romans, and over the centuries the castle was occupied by various rulers, including the Venetians and Ottomans. The oldest remains of the castle come from the 6th and 7th centuries, but most of it was built between the 15th and 17th centuries.

This defensive structure also served as a backdrop for Game of Thrones, and many fans still come to visit the filming locations. But a trip to Klis Fortress is also worthwhile in other ways, as there are numerous attractions to discover. If you want to see the fortress in detail, you can plan 1.5-2 hours for the visit. The castle complex is quite large and there are many stone paths and staircases that lead through the castle grounds. From the battlements and towers of the castle you have a breathtaking view of the Adriatic coast, the city of Split and the surrounding countryside. You can also visit historic gates from the 6th century, there is a Venetian armory and tickets are also valid for the nearby Olive Museum.
