Lake Skadar – Visit Monenegro`s nature juwel
Lake Skadar, also named Skadarsko Jezero is shared between Montenegro and Albania. On the Montenegrin side it is declared as a national park and today it´s one of Europe’s largest bird habitats. Also it´s the home of the Dalmatien pelicans, if you are lucky you can even have the chance to see them!
Additionally, the Lake Skadar national park offers some spectacular places, like island monasteries, wonderful viewpoints, floating water lilies and perfect clear waters. If you are a nature lover, it`s definitely the right place for you.
Top places and best views at Lake Skadar National Park
From Virpazar to Rijeka Crnojevica
Because of its huge size it’s not always easy to find the most picturesque nature spots of the lake. Our recommendation:
- By car: Arriving by car in Virpazar you have to turn left, take the road in direction to Rijeka Crnojevica. On your way you will find plenty of beautiful photo spots and impressive viewpoints. The whole surrounding was really impressive, everything is so green und lush – the nature is incredible there! We even saw some small animals like turtles, lizards, snakes and huge insects just next to the road. Make a stop at Rijeka Crnojevica, a cute laid-back village with its historic bridge.
- By boat: There is also a possibility to go there by boat to enjoy the stunning river scenery from Virpazar to Rijeka Crnojevica. Don’t take a tour on one of the large tour boats – the won`t bring you to the beautiful parts of the lake. Discover the narrow canals, you will see lots of birds, water lilies, butterflies and maybe some pelicans.

Pavlova Strana Viewpoint – Lake Skadar ( Skadarsko Jezero )
If you are up to go to the famous postcard motif of Lake Skadar you have to follow the road to the Pavlova Strana viewpoint (3,5 km from Rijeka Crnojevica).
Boat tour at Lake Skadar (Skadarsko Jezero) from Virpazar
There are different kind of boat tours from Virpazar. We booked a tour from the Hotel Pelikan. Honestly, it was nice but nothing special – the tour only took us to the middle of the lake. We would recommend taking a small boat with a private skipper to go to Rijeka Crnojevica.
Visiting the Lake Skadar was a fantastic experience for us. We had been overwhelmed by the pure nature, the wonderful views and this never ending lake. For us it was one of the best things to see in Montenegro and we highly recommend this place – it´s a paradise!
