Best Things to Do in Kobarid

A visit to Kobarid is a guarantee of unforgettable experiences and cool activities. There is a lot to see, especially in nature, but you can also emerge in Slovenia’s culture by visiting special places. Here are the most amazing things to do in Kobarid, which should not be missed on any trip:

Napoleon’s Bridge

One of the most famous sights of Kobarid is the Napoleon’s Bridge built in 1750, which is around 900 meters from the city center. The history of this historic stone bridge goes back a long way, and Napoleon’s troops marched from here towards Predel. It was destroyed in the First World War, but later it was rebuilt. Today, it is one of the most important attractions and offers a spectacular view of one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, the beautiful emerald blue Soča.

Tip: The crystal clear Soča is a popular river for swimming. Those who are not afraid of the cool temperatures of the mountain river can take a refreshing dip at some places.

St. Anthony Church & the Italian Ossuary

The Italian ossuary as well as the Church of St. Anthony (Kostnica s Cerkvijo Sv. Antona) are very interesting places and really worth seeing. This historic attraction was built remembering the fallen Italian soldiers in Slovenia. It is located near Kobarid at an altitude of 309 meters. Especially the architecture is unique here: The monument has the shape of an octagon, which, with 3 circles, narrows towards the top. Above is the church of St. Anthony, which had already been built in the 17th century, before the ossuary.

Kozjak Waterfall

The spectacular Kozjak Waterfall is just breathtaking and one of the best places to visit in Kobarid and the Soča region. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia and a hike there is an absolute must. Passing green meadows, a dizzying wooden suspension bridge and through a deep mystical forest with high rock walls, a comfortable walk leads towards the waterfall. Arriving in a half-cave, the approximately 15-meter-high Kozjak waterfall plunges into a turquoise-blue pool, which creates an impressive backdrop.

Kobarid Historical Trail

One of the most beautiful and interesting things to do in Kobarid is to hike the historical nature trail. On a route of around 8 kilometers you will pass some of the most beautiful natural sites as well as the many historical monuments. The Kobarid Museum, the Napoleon Bridge with the Soča River, the hilltop settlement Tonocov grad and the Kozjak waterfall are just a few of the highlights on this route. Including breaks, you should plan around 4 hours for the entire round.

Tip: The tourist office offers free maps of Kobarid, which also list this route and contain some information on the route’s main attractions.

Kobarid Museum

The Kobarid Museum is located in the center of the city and informs tourists about what happened during the First World War, especially about the legacy of the Isonzo Front, the site of the greatest mountain battle in history. Photographic material and numerous exhibits provide a captivating insight into life during the war and narrate the bloody history along the Soča. An interesting museum in Kobarid that should not only be visited on rainy days.

Village Drežnica

A real insider tip for a trip to Kobarid is a visit to the romantic mountain village Drežnica. It is located around 6 kilometers from the town’s center and impresses with an exceptionally beautiful ambience. The entire area is a fantastic starting point for hikes in the Krn Mountains or for long nature walks. Across pastures, through forests and passing small waterfalls, numerous trails lead to the village. A wonderful place for a few relaxing days in Slovenia’s mountains.

The centuries-old paths from Pradol and Robidišče led over the bridge, which continue along the Nadiža River. But not only the historic bridge is beautiful, the entire natural backdrop is absolutely picturesque and worth seeing!

Tip: Don’t forget your bathing suit because this crystal-clear river is just perfect for swimming. And the water here is also warmer than in the Soca mountain river.
