The 7 Best Beaches in Medulin
The beautiful beaches of Medulin turn it into one of the most popular tourist resorts in Istria. Along the enchanting Riviera you have a wide choice of bathing places, but also in the immediate vicinity there are a number of beautiful bays. Especially popular is Plaza Bijeca, the long sandy beach of Medulin, where the tourist center is also located just behind it. In addition, along the coast, there are countless other great pebble and rocky beaches that invite you to relax and jump into the cool water. But what are the best beaches of Medulin, what are the insider tips and which bays are particularly suitable for a vacation?
In this travel guide, we introduce the 7 best beaches in Medulin. In addition, there are plenty of tips and information, which will help you plan your trip.
Sandy Beach Bijeca
Bijeca beach is located in the center of Medulin and is the most popular spot for an enjoyable beach-time in the village. This sandy beach is about 1 kilometer long and falls into the sea very shallowly, which is appreciated especially by families. Natural shade can be found under the trees on the western part of the coast. Parasols and sunbeds are also available for rent. Just behind the beach, the promenade leads towards the small port, where restaurants and souvenir stores are located. At the upper end, the sandy beach Bijeca turns into a pebble beach. Quite special is the headland inside the sea that only rises out of the water during low tide.
We spent a full afternoon here and the shallow water really does make it one of the easiest beaches for kids we saw in the area. Just be prepared for crowds, this is by far the busiest beach in Medulin, especially in July and August, and finding a free spot on the sand by midday can be tricky.
Tip: For a vacation in Medulin we can recommend the beautiful apartments of Jakic House, only 100 meters from the sandy beach Bijeca!
Alba Chiara Beach
One of the most beautiful beaches of Medulin is definitely Alba Chiara Beach. This beautiful bay is located east of the city center and delights both with crystal clear water and fantastic colors. The many blue-striped umbrellas, which can be rented on site for a fee, also add to a particularly charming backdrop. This beach is a coarse pebble beach, where various sports activities such as canoeing and pedal boating are offered and where a small beach bar provides refreshments.
Tip: There are some beautiful accommodations for a beach vacation in Medulin right next to the beach, including Villa Marija with pool and the modern Apartments Jasmin!
Beach Skrape (Arena Camping Medulin)
The Beach Skarpe is located in the complex Arena Camping Medulin and is very popular among campers. Here, a really idyllic rocky coast with crystal clear sea and beautiful watercolors leaves an impression. Thanks to the natural environment, this beach is also perfect for snorkeling as well as marveling at an interesting underwater world. Between the rocky sections, there are always small pebble bays that provide easy access to the sea. The big old pine trees are also beautiful, which give this beach a certain something.
Beach Belvedere
Beach Belvedere is very popular with vacationers. This charming stretch of coast was named after the hotel of the same name Belvedere, which is located just behind it. Visitors love this clean pebble beach, where concrete surfaces also attract tourists to sunbathe and relax. On a length of about 500 meters, you will find enough sunbeds with parasols; also showers and even free Wi-Fi are provided here. Picturesque is also the walk along the promenade, where you can stroll to the center of Medulin. We walked the promenade from here into Medulin center, it’s an easy 15 minutes and a nice way to end the day.
Tip: The Hotel Plaza Belvedere delights its guests with 2 outdoor pools, a spa, and wellness center and, of course, the top location directly by the sea!
Beach Camping Kazela
One of the most beautiful beaches of Medulin is the approximately 2 km long beach Camping Kazela. It is located in the popular Arena Grand Kažela campsite in the east of the resort and has a particularly idyllic atmosphere. Here you can relax comfortably on green lawns. Pine trees offer natural shade and the beautiful blue sea is perfect for swimming pleasure. Along the coast you will find a mix of small pebble coves and stone beaches, part of which is a designated nudist beach. We noticed the nudist section is clearly separated from the rest of the beach, easy to avoid if that’s not what you’re looking for.
Apart from the beautiful beaches, campsite guests enjoy two beautiful outdoor pools, a children’s playground, a restaurant, and a bar with a sea view!
Tip: Really great for a relaxing vacation are the modern mobile homes of Arena Grand Kažela campsite, in the best location by the sea.
Levan Island Sandy Beach
Another beach paradise can be found on Levan Island because not only the beaches in Medulin are beautiful, also the surroundings offer fantastic bays to swim and chill! Unique is the beautiful sandy beach, which makes this small island so popular. This was the one that surprised us the most. We didn’t expect sand this fine and water this turquoise so close to the mainland, it genuinely looks like it belongs somewhere in the Caribbean! Stunning are also the lovely beach bars, where cool drinks are served up to the sunbeds and which amaze with a brilliant view.
Tip: The best way to get to Levan island is by taxi boat. It runs several times a day between Medulin harbor and the island. A cheaper option is the taxi boat directly in front of the island.
Beaches Kamenjak Nature Park (Premantura)
The most amazing beaches near Medulin can be found in the Kamenjak Nature Park in Premantura. The village Premantura in Istria is a popular vacation resort located next to Medulin, where you can also find many nice accommodations. There you can expect a whole variety of fantastic natural bays, embedded in an extremely idyllic natural landscape. The beaches Njive, Penizule, Mala Kolumbarica with its famous high cliffs and beach Skoljic, where a good windsurf school is located, are really recommendable. We took our car to explore this area properly, the bays are spread out enough that walking between them all isn’t realistic.
Tip: A great choice for a vacation in Premantura is the Apartment Bianca Premantura, a wonderfully pretty villa with a large terrace.
Conclusion: Which Medulin Beach Should You Choose?
We’ve been to all seven of these beaches ourselves, and if we had to pick just one, it would be Levan Island. The water color and the sand caught us off guard, it’s not what you expect from this part of Croatia, and it’s genuinely one of the more unique beaches we’ve found in Istria.
Bijeca is still the easiest choice for families, the shallow water and short walk into the center make it low-effort in the best way. Alba Chiara works better if you want something quieter without leaving the mainland. And if you’re already staying at Arena Camping Medulin or Camping Kazela, you don’t need to look any further than the beach right in front of you.
