General Information about Mykonos Windmills

The world famous Windmills of Mykonos are located in the capital of Mykonos, just a few minutes walk from the town center. The architecture is characteristic, with whitewashed walls, wooden roofs, small windows and the typical wooden wings that give the Cycladic landscape its fairytale panorama. Their history dates back to the 16th century when they were built by the Venetians to grind grain. Most of the windmills face north to take advantage of the island’s strong winds. The flour obtained was once used to bake rusks, known as paximadi, for sailors. With the advent of electricity in the mid-20th century, the mills lost their function, but today they have been beautifully restored and serve as a photo opportunity.

There are still 6 windmills standing out of the original 10. One of them is a charming souvenir shop and can also be visited from the inside. A romantic atmosphere awaits visitors, especially at sunset. At this time, many tourists come to admire the magical play of colors and the view of the sea from the hill of the windmills. However, an insider tip is to visit early in the morning, when you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere away from the crowds. The surrounding sights are also interesting. Thanks to its central location, the windmills are an ideal starting point for exploring Mykonos town and the old port. Just a few steps away is the beautiful Little Venice, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the windmills.
