Essaouira Beach – Info and Tips

Essaouira beach is a vast, golden sandy beach located just outside the old town. It runs for miles from the harbor down to the ruins of Borj El Baroud and to the dunes in the east. Due to its size, it is never crowded; in the morning it almost seems deserted, and the atmosphere is always pleasantly relaxed. Usually, a fresh breeze is blowing, which provides a little cooling, especially in the summer months. This beach is also beautiful in the evening during sunset, when the sky shows the most beautiful shades of pink and red.

A real highlight is also the beach promenade, a 5-kilometer-long promenade, which enchants with a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. Locals as well as many tourists stroll up and down here, enjoying the view and watching the lively beach life. In between, small café-bars invite to take a break, offering mint tea and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Swimming at Essaouira Beach

Especially in the summer months, you can swim at the Essaouira beach. Keep in mind, however, that you are in Morocco, at the Atlantic Ocean, and therefore you have to expect water temperatures throughout the year between refreshing 17 and 20 degrees. If that’s too cold for you, book one of the beach hotels that have heated pools. Bikini are allowed on the beach of Essaouira, but you should not necessarily walk up and down the beach promenade only in swimwear.

Activities on the beach

Essaouira Beach is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts and is known far beyond the borders of Morocco for exactly that. Especially kite surfers and windsurfers appreciate the optimal wind and wave conditions of this elongated bay. If you like, you can rent surfboards in one of the water sports centers or book a course at one of the many local surf schools. Besides water sports, there are other great things to do: Horseback riding, camel rides, splashy quad tours, kayaking, jogging and also soccer is a popular game here on the beach.
