The stunning beaches of Pula make this charming harbor town one of the most popular holiday destinations in Croatia. Compared to other regions in Istria, Pula offers an especially wide variety of different beaches. We personally consider many of these bays to be among the most beautiful in all of Istria, as the region is home to a whole range of incredibly spectacular swimming spots with breathtaking sea colors. From gorgeous pebble coves and secluded natural beaches to well-maintained stone beaches, small sandy stretches, and even quiet nude (FKK) bays—there’s something here for everyone. Many of these beaches have even been awarded the Blue Flag, a distinction for excellent facilities, water quality, and cleanliness. But which are truly the very best beaches in Pula? Which ones are ideal for a relaxing beach holiday, and where can you still find real hidden gems?
In this travel guide, we reveal the most beautiful beaches in Pula, Croatia. This article is based on our many trips to Istria and countless beach holidays in the region. We’ll also share stunning photos, along with useful tips and information to help you plan your trip.
Gortans Beach
The beautiful Gortans Beach, also known as Gortanova Uvala, ranks at the very top among the best beaches in Pula and was, for us, one of the most relaxing swimming spots in the area. This particularly picturesque bay is located directly along the charming Lungomare seaside promenade and can easily be reached by bike or car from the Valkane district.
This beach features white pebbles and offers a gentle entry into the turquoise-blue sea, making it ideal for families with children. For those who prefer quiet sunbathing and relaxation, there are also several lovely stone plateaus along the edges of the bay. Just behind the beach, you’ll find a small, cozy beach bar that provides refreshments, ice cream, and snacks throughout the day.
Tip: Around 150 meters from Gortans Beach there is a charming little settlement with some recommendable apartments, such as the modern Lovely Studio Apartment.
Batana Beach
Batana Beach is a charming little pebble beach named after the trendy Batana Beach Bar. Along the edges of the bay, especially on the rocky coastline, you’ll also find quiet swimming spots, and a long jetty invites you to jump straight into the sea.
While sunbathing, you can enjoy a wonderful atmosphere with views of passing sailboats and the Verudela peninsula opposite. This beach is especially popular with a younger crowd, and we always enjoy spending time along this lively stretch of coast. The motto here is definitely “see and be seen.” You should definitely stop by the cool beach bar, which attracts visitors with great drinks and a unique setting right by the water.
Tip: Close to the beach you will find some lovely accommodations, such as the beautiful Goga Apartments which are located in a quiet location by the sea!
Hawaii Beach
Hawaii Beach is simply breathtaking and, for many, the most beautiful beach in Pula. From our own experience, we can say: you absolutely have to see this one! With scenery straight out of a travel magazine, this bay is a true dream beach along the coast of Pula and shouldn’t be missed on any trip.
Visitors can enjoy a pebble cove with smooth white stones, a gently sloping shoreline, and stunning surrounding rock formations. Swimming here truly feels like being in the Caribbean! The sea glows in the most incredible shades of turquoise, the water is crystal clear, and it’s also perfect for snorkeling. A real showstopper!
Tip: Hawaii Beach is located in the resort of Verudela. Vacationers love the 3-star Hotel Park Plaza Arena Pula, which is in a prime location right behind the dream beach!
Beach Svjetionik
Svjetionik Beach, also known as Lighthouse Beach, is an incredibly beautiful rocky beach that captivates visitors with its dramatic scenery, high cliffs, and stunning turquoise sea. This beach is especially popular with couples and independent travelers, as it tends to be quieter and more secluded than Pula’s main beaches. We’ve visited several times and always found the peaceful atmosphere particularly enjoyable.
Just behind the beach, you’ll find the fantastic Bonaca cocktail bar, where you can enjoy amazing coastal views from the terrace. A wonderful swimming spot with a unique ambiance and definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in Pula!
Tip: Right next to the beach is a very luxuriously equipped lighthouse with 3 bedrooms, which can be rented for a very special stay in Pula.
Plaza Histria Beach
Histria Beach is one of the top beaches near Pula and is located south of the city on the Verudela peninsula. When visiting this stunning bay, you’ll be amazed by its exceptionally beautiful pebble beach, fantastic water quality, and unique holiday atmosphere. You can rent umbrellas and sun loungers here, but the fragrant pine trees at the edge of the bay also provide wonderful shade on hot summer days. Behind the beach, there’s a large sports complex offering tennis, mini golf, table tennis, and even golf facilities. A fantastic beach for a seaside holiday and, in our experience, also very suitable for families with children.
Tip: Histria Beach is located by the beautiful Hotel Park Plaza Histria, a very popular hotel complex with pool and leisure facilities, perfect for a beach vacation!
Cyclon’s Beach & Pula Sea Cave
A true hidden gem among Pula’s beaches is Cyclone Beach, located in the western part of the city near Stoja. This spot really surprised us: surrounded by lush nature, this idyllic bay impresses with incredibly dramatic scenery. The beach is a mix of pebbles and rocks, and the surrounding pine trees create a wonderfully Mediterranean atmosphere. The turquoise sea is absolutely stunning and perfect for swimming. When snorkeling, you can also explore a rich underwater world with plenty of fish.
What we didn’t expect: right next to the beach is another natural highlight—the Pula Cave, which you definitely shouldn’t miss. It’s a popular spot for cliff jumpers and also for kayakers who explore the cave from the inside. Kayak tours can easily be booked online.
Centinera Beach
The idyllic Centinera Beach is located in Banjole, a district in the southern part of Pula. This gently sloping pebble beach is especially appreciated by older visitors and families with children, as it offers easy access into the sea.
Toward the edges of the bay, the coastline becomes rockier, while a pine forest provides pleasantly cool shade on hot days. In summer, a small inflatable water park is set up directly in the sea, offering fun and action for both kids and adults. The sea water here is also particularly clear and inviting.
Tip: The Sunset Apartments are a real insider tip for a beach vacation. They are located just a few steps from the beach and score with modern furnishings.
Ambrela Beach
Ambrela Beach, located on the Verudela peninsula just a few kilometers from Pula’s city center, is another very popular spot. The sea shines in beautiful shades of blue, is crystal clear, and exceptionally clean. This bay is also perfect for snorkeling, as numerous fish can be seen underwater. In the evenings, you can enjoy spectacular sunsets along this stretch of coast. While there’s little natural shade directly on the beach, pine forests at the edges provide cool shelter. Refreshments and snacks are available at the beach bars located slightly above the bay.
Tip: Just a short walk away is the stunning Grand Hotel Brioni Pula, one of the best 5-star hotels for a beach holiday in Pula!
Valkane Beach
Valkane Beach is a popular city beach among both locals and tourists. It has been awarded the Blue Flag, a recognition for excellent water quality and top facilities. What stood out to us: the beach mainly consists of concrete sunbathing platforms, although there is also a small pebble section. Stairs and ladders provide easy access to the sea. In peak summer, it can get quite crowded, but during the off-season, it’s a real highlight. Shaded areas can be found further back under the pine trees, where you’ll also discover a few nice beach bars. Accommodation options nearby are somewhat limited.
Banjole Beach
Another beautiful and popular beach in Pula is Banjole Beach, also known as Del Mar Beach. It is located near the holiday village of Banjole in the southern part of the Pula region. Families with children especially love this approximately 450-meter-long, gently sloping white pebble beach, which boasts crystal-clear water and a charming atmosphere. We were particularly impressed by the stunning water colors.
Some trees above the bay provide shade, and during the season, umbrellas and sun loungers are also available for rent. At one end of the bay, you’ll find several restaurants and cafés offering food and drinks.
Tip: In the resort of Banjole are many accommodations not far from the sea. Popular is the pretty apartment Valentina with beautiful furnishings and in a quiet location!
Premantura (Kamenjak Nature Park)
In the Kamenjak Nature Park in Premantura, just a short drive from Pula, you’ll find some of the most beautiful swimming spots in the entire region. To be honest, these beaches are among our personal favorites around Pula.
Visitors can expect a wide variety of paradise-like bays, set within a stunning natural landscape and surrounded by breathtaking postcard scenery. Particularly popular and highly recommended are Njive Beach, the beautiful Penizule Bay, Mala Kolumbarica Beach with its high cliffs, and Skoljic Beach, where you’ll also find a windsurfing school. There is even a small sandy beach in the park, which is especially popular with families with young children.
Tip: Nearby accommodations can be found in the small village of Premantura, such as the recommended Apartment Bianca Premantura.
Conclusion
The beaches around Pula are absolutely stunning. If it’s your first time visiting, you shouldn’t miss famous highlights like Hawaii Beach or the beaches on the Verudela peninsula. At the same time, it’s definitely worth exploring beyond the main spots—especially around Stoja or in Kamenjak Nature Park, where we discovered some of our favorite and most beautiful swimming spots.
